Cat Auburn
Artist Statement
My name is Cat Auburn; I am an Aotearoa New Zealand artist living in Scotland. I engage with sociological, historical and political hyperobjects: a term coined by the philosopher Timothy Morton to describe events that are too vast for an individual to wholly grasp and experience. Investigating how culture is constructed, reinforced, and strategically employed lies at the heart of my interdisciplinary practice.
I am currently an AHRC Northern Bridge Consortium PhD candidate at Northumbria University (UK). My doctoral research is a practice-based, autotheoretical exploration of the personal, political and social stakes of engaging with national identity and collective memory. I am co-editor of the Special Issue of the journal Arts, titled Autotheory in Contemporary Visual Arts Practice. I am also a co-host of the podcast series, Thinking-With – a long-form, intentional act of thinking together and staying with the trouble between myself and artist/architect Kyle Lewis.
